El Fenn is an immersion. Into Marrakech’s palette. Into sensory richness. Into a history that doesn’t just whisper - it sings, echoes, and dances in every tile and carved wooden beam.

You arrive through an unmarked door and step into a walled fantasia of colour, texture, and tiled sensuality. Lanterns flicker against hand-plastered walls, casting shadows that seem choreographed. Artworks by African contemporaries and European masters hang beside Berber rugs, brass antiques, and mid-century curiosities. Each room tells a different story, drawn from the pages of Marrakech’s creative spirit and layered with texture and intrigue.

The riad sprawls across multiple interconnected buildings, revealing itself like a novel - chapter by chapter. Secret staircases lead to secluded nooks and rooftop hideaways that frame the snow-dusted Atlas like a mirage. There's a boutique filled with kaftans and curiosities, a library with worn leather chairs and photography monographs, a spa offering rose-scented scrubs, and corners made for poetry, privacy, and whispered conversations.

Days here unfold in a rhythm both indulgent and enchanted - begin with rooftop breakfasts layered with saffron yoghurt, get gloriously lost in the maze of souks, then return for chilled rosé by the plunge pool or an afternoon of journalling beneath jacaranda trees. The design asks to be noticed, but the energy asks you to soften. To surrender.

Evenings unfold with intention. Candlelight flickers across painted ceilings. The scent of jasmine and oud wafts through the courtyards. Live music drifts between columns, sometimes jazz, sometimes gnawa, always unexpected. Conversations unravel over slow tagines and handmade ceramics, and the medina murmurs beyond like a distant lullaby.

It’s a living gallery. A sanctuary. A moodboard come to life - painted in jewel tones and lit by moonlight.

EL FENN’S BEATING HEART

El Fenn’s soul is stitched into every surface. The restoration was led by co-founder Vanessa Branson, who partnered with Moroccan artisans to ensure no detail lost its lineage. Every archway and tile bears the fingerprint of time and craftsmanship, where modern curation meets ancient spirit. Here, tradition isn’t romanticised - it’s reactivated.

The SLOJOURN spark

FIRST. The rooftop garden – a botanical refuge perched above the medina, where yoga mats meet skyline views and slow breakfasts become cinematic scenes.

SECOND. The in-house concept store – curated by Moroccan tastemakers, it’s where you’ll find artisan ceramics, limited-run kaftans, and design pieces that feel like they belong in both a gallery and your suitcase.

THIRD. The plunge pools – tucked into courtyards and terraces, they’re not just for cooling off - they’re for slipping into another era, where time dilates and the scent of jasmine lingers in the steam.

Large Room

El Fenn’s 31 rooms and suites are all different - but all hypnotic. You might sleep under hand-painted ceilings, bathe in a freestanding tub tiled in lapis blue, or wake to calligraphy walls and antique lanterns. Some have private plunge pools or fireplaces. All have tactile decadence, from velvet upholstery to Berber textiles to curated art that surprises and stirs.

The art of living

At El Fenn, life unfolds in layered texture - each day a tapestry of taste, scent, sound, and soul. Wake to birdsong echoing across the courtyard tiles. Let the scent of simmered oranges and cardamom draw you to rooftop breakfasts - served with mint tea and views of the Atlas. Then wander: into the medina, into a gallery, into a moment.

Evenings here are golden and unhurried. Fountains murmur, candles flicker, and conversation flows like honeyed arak. You are not just staying - you’re steeping in the rhythm of a city that rewards presence over pace.

The forever lens

  • WATER: El Fenn filters its own well water for drinking, served in glass bottles throughout the property. Low-flow taps, refillable bath products, and drought-conscious landscaping support a lighter water footprint.

WASTE: Composting and recycling are integrated into daily operations. Food waste supports local farms, and single-use plastic has been replaced with biodegradable alternatives or eliminated entirely. The boutique champions slow fashion, stocking only artisans who follow low-impact methods.

ARCHITECTURE: The restoration used traditional techniques—tadelakt plaster, zellige tilework, hand-carved cedar—and employed local masons and craftspeople to preserve both structure and spirit. Every renovation decision favours cultural continuity over modern uniformity.

ENERGY: Thick medina walls, courtyards, and shaded terraces provide passive cooling. Hot water comes via rooftop solar panels, and lighting is energy-efficient throughout.

The together lens

  • El Fenn is deeply enmeshed in the fabric of Marrakech. From employing locals across all departments to collaborating with emerging Moroccan designers, the lodge is a canvas for creative and cultural reciprocity.

Revenue from the boutique and select events funds community-based programmes—including Project Soar, which supports girls’ empowerment through education. Guest events spotlight Moroccan thinkers, authors, and artists, nurturing dialogue rather than performance.

This is a medina stay that doesn’t just observe - it contributes.

The take it with you

  • • A ceramic incense holder made in Fez
    • A colour obsession you’ll try to replicate at home
    • A statement piece from LRNCE that makes everything feel more cinematic
    • The call to prayer embedded in your bones

WE SLOJOURNED HERE
