BENEATH THE SURFACE: Fiji is more than the sum of its postcard coves. Comprising 333 islands scattered across the South Pacific like pearls in turquoise, this archipelago is a living constellation of volcanoes, coral atolls, and deep ancestral energy. From the lush peaks of Taveuni to the limestone cliffs of the Yasawas and the tidal rhythms of the Lau Group, each region holds its own mood and its own mana (spiritual force).
Sitting at the crossroads of Melanesian culture and oceanic biodiversity, Fiji’s geography is as poetic as it is powerful. Fiji may be known for its turquoise waters and cinematic beaches, but it also stands as a nation on the frontline of climate change. Sea-level rise, tropical cyclones, and saltwater intrusion into farmlands are already transforming life across the islands. In response, Fiji has emerged as a global climate leader.
The government has already relocated six communities to higher ground, and more are planned. The Climate Relocation of Communities Trust Fund was launched in 2019 - a world-first fund dedicated to climate migration. In places like Vunidogoloa village, relocation has been handled with care and cultural continuity, maintaining links to ancestral land even as the sea reclaims it.
